Articles from Spring 07 District 1

Local Wildlife Oasis

A TREASURED KEEPSAKE of District 1 is the Santa Rosa Plateau (pictured above). This secluded refuge in the Santa Ana Mountains is a place of rare beauty and serenity that belies its location near the city: distant mesas glimpsed through fog, a moss-draped oak overlooking a shallow canyon, cumulus clouds floating over seasonal vernal pools. It blends the region's largest expanse of native grasslands with wetlands, coastal sage scrub, chaparral and dramatic stands of rare Engelmann oak.

Visitors to the Reserve can enjoy the oldest standing structures in Riverside County that once served as bunkhouses for cowboys dating back to 1846. These two adobe structures remain shaded by a 400 year old tree and separated by a relaxing, one-of-akind picnic area. Other recreational activities include hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, and interpretive programs.

Whether you are hosting a special event, enjoying a respite from noise, traffic and crowds, hiking our natural trail system, taking a mini-vacation at one of our many campsites, spending a day fishing at one of our beautiful lake locations or exploring the county's past at the Jensen-Alvarado Ranch, the Gilman Historic Ranch and Wagon Museum or at the San Timoteo Schoolhouse, the Riverside County parks system has something for everyone to enjoy!

Trail Blazing For A Healthier Life

A PARTNERSHIP, SEVERAL YEARS IN THE MAKING, was formally established in June of 2006 between Riverside, San Bernardino and Orange counties, the Santa Ana Watershed Project Authority, the Wildlands Conservancy and 15 cities to create the Santa Ana River Trail and Parkway.

The goal of the partnership is to have the trail built by 2010 with agreements in place to manage and maintain the trail cooperatively across jurisdictional boundaries. When complete, the Santa Ana River Trail and Parkway will extend from north to south, some 100 miles, from the ever-soscenic San Bernardino Mountains to the beautiful coastline of the Pacific Ocean.

The presence of the trail will enhance the value of housing; attract businesses and employees to the area; provide alternative commuting options and access to outdoor recreational amenities.

This will contribute to a healthier lifestyle and result in improved quality of life for local residents. The trail will accommodate all types of uses including bicycling, hiking, walking, jogging and horseback riding.

Construction is underway in both Riverside and San Bernardino Counties, and approximately 17 continuous miles will be available by summer of 2007.

Silver-Haired Years are Golden

SENIORS TODAY ARE LIVING LONGER, HEALTHIER LIVES and we must do everything we can to help them be as independent and active as possible.

The Wildomar Senior Leisure Retirement Community has affordable independent senior apartments and assisted living units with basic utilities that are well designed and beautifully decorated. The landscape is similar to a park with walking trails, benches and conversation stops. Barbeque and picnic areas are great for family and friend get-togethers. A large pool, Jacuzzi, cabana and community clubhouse, better known as the Senior Center, are available to the Senior Leisure Community residents as well as senior citizens of Riverside County in the area.

The Senior Center offers a wide variety of activities to help preserve the independence of elders by keeping them connected to the community. Five days a week, Wildomar's exercise program covers a wide range of physical work-outs such as:

  • Chair Aerobics
  • Low-Impact Aerobics
  • Aqua Aerobics
  • Fitness Walks
  • Therapeutic Gardening

The center is equipped with a big screen TV for movie viewing and an extensive library for quiet reading. Hospice networking and nursing seminars are held regularly and the community bus provides transportation for doctor's appointments, dialysis, x-ray and personal shopping needs for on-site residents. Computer classes held by Patti Lockovich from Yesterday's Pearls help seniors stay current with the fast-paced tech world.

At the Wildomar Senior Community Center, patrons are convinced that staying active is the key to a higher quality of life. The atmosphere at the center resembles that of many private social clubs with one distinct difference: it's designed to meet the needs of one of the nation's fastest growing populations, senior citizens.
